After many many drawings, I have come to the conclusion that it is not possible to think your way to a fresh and lively drawing. The only way to arrive at that destination is to turn off the critical, thinking, talking part of the brain and embrace the process silently with no separation from the process.

Welcome to my drawing blog!

I draw mainly with charcoal on very large paper. I prefer poses that last less than 15 minutes, because it forces me to draw very quickly. The faster I draw, the less I try to think may way to a good drawing. If I draw extremely fast, I enter a "drawing trance" and I stop thinking. At that point, I just draw. You could say I'm in the zone or the process just flows..whatever you call it, I find its the only way for me to draw well. There is a sense of fusion of subject and object. As in mediatation, oneness is briefly achieved (or perhaps realized is a better way to say it) and I momentarily find a peaceful place to rest from the incessant chatter of thinking.
